Tombstone Cake

This post was originally published in 2016 on my other blog, but I love this cake, so I'm sharing it here!

 Happy Halloween!

I made this spooky graveyard cake for a Halloween themed birthday party yesterday!

I took my vanilla cake, and made it into a raspberry poke cake!

It was actually super nerve wracking!  I removed the cakes from the pans, cooled them and placed them on a silpat lined baking sheet.  Then I poked them with a fork, poured the jell-o over and refrigerated.  And you guys – those were some very very wet cakes!

Nevertheless, I forged ahead and had a heck of a time getting the chocolate frosting to stick to that cake, but eventually we got there.  The actual decorating was pretty fun!  I found candy bones on clearance at the craft store.  I broke them up and then painted some tinted corn syrup on the ends to add a little gore.

Then I made the moon out of chocolate melts and the pumpkins and tombstones from fondant!

Thankfully the cake held together (this one stayed refrigerated until it was served) and the birthday boy was thrilled!
