As I mentioned a bit ago when I shared Spud’s pancake art, he is a bit of a Michael Jordan fanatic. When he outgrew his shoes, he needed to replace them with Jordans (which I had to order because the color scheme he wanted wasn’t available locally).
And even though we were on our big East Coast road trip over his birthday, we celebrated early with a cake, which, you guessed it, was a Jordan One Cake.
Now, when he first requested the cake, I imagined a round cake with a 2D Jordan laying flat on top. Or at the most, a mini 3D Jordan topper.
But no, Spud was feeling really extra and wanted his cake to be a full sized Jordan shoe.
Thank goodness he has a summer birthday (yes, it’s taken me a bit to get to sharing this one), because he was my creative consultant through the entire decorating process.
He wanted chocolate cake with chocolate frosting, which posed its own challenges with white frosting and all, but we overcame. Spud was there every step of the way from when I stacked and trimmed the cake, to when I dyed the fondant, to every little shape and detail, making sure the pieces were layered correctly, and that I even included stitching, and that the shoe was laced correctly.
This cake was certainly a process (an all day process - over 5 hours of decorating), and the most challenging cake I’ve made to date. Thank goodness Spud is so artistic, I don’t think I ever could have pulled it off without his eye for artistic detail.
Later, when I shared a picture of him and his cake, I was flattered to hear that a couple people thought it was a real shoe. We were very proud of this cake…but not afraid to eat it that evening!
