Dairy-Free Crispie Treat Hay Bales

I was recently at a baby shower that was farm themed.  The organizers asked me to make hay bale treats to accommodate for some food allergies among attendants.

Rice Krispie Treats are generally made with some butter, but since dairy was among the allergies, I opted to use crisco vegetable shortening for these.

These didn’t turn out quite how I wanted, but I made a cute cake (next post) that made the whole thing come together.  Luckily,  they were super delicious and everyone loved them!

Dairy Free Rice Krispie Treats Hay Bales

Adapted from Rice Krispies

3 tablespoons vegetable shortening

1 (10 ounce) packages mini marshmallows

6 cups Rice Krispie cereal

3-4 Pull & Peel Cherry Twizzlers

Place the shortening and marshmallows in a large microwavable bowl.

Heat in 60 second intervals, stirring each time, until melted and smooth.

Add the cereal and stir until coated.

Grease hands liberally, then take handfuls of rice krispie mix and form into oval hay bale shapes.

Once all the treats have been formed, wrap twizzler pieces around each end.  Serve within 24 hours for optimal freshness.
